The Medicare Better Access Program provides patients with a rebate for up to 10 individual psychology treatment sessions per calendar year.   In order to make use of this service, you will need to see your GP and ask for a GP Mental Health Plan (MHP).   Your GP will only be able to refer you under the Medicare Better Access Program if they believe you suffer from a diagnosable mental health condition.

Medicare funding does not cover couples counselling.   Psychological reports (such as educational assessments, or legal reports) are also not covered under Medicare, although some initial assessments will be covered under Medicare.

Please note that the Medicare rebate will usually only cover a portion of the entire fee for your psychology treatment.  Bulk-billing may be considered in some cases, but is provided on a very limited basis and at the discretion of the psychologist. Please do not assume you will be bulk-billed.

For more information, see the Fees page.
